| Description |
The Madonna figure has her hands to her chest in prayer formation; to her left an infant Christ holds right hand in a blessing gesture; on his left hand he holds a scroll-like sheet of paper.
In painting, the revolutionary artistic direction of the Italian Renaissance began to appear as early as the 14th century under the influence of Giotto and his immediate followers. In contrast to the Byzantine tradition, the newer painting reflected a closer observation of nature. In this, the artists of Florence took the lead. Painters in other centers however, such as Siena where this painting was created, often remained loyal to the International Style of the late Gothic.
