| Description |
John James Masquerier was of French parentage, but was born in England. When he returned to England he came under the influence of Sir Thomas Lawrence, a fashionable portraitist. He probably also knew the work of the Scottish painter, Sir Henry Raeburn. His fresh, almost impressionistic handling of pastels gives this portrait its lively quality.
Mrs. Joseph Blackett, wife of poet Joseph Blackett, died of consumption the year her portrait was made. |
