| Description |
This folk landscape of the view from Stapleton, Staten Island is based closely on a print by William Rickarby Miller (1818-1893), an active Staten Island artist. Miller's son, Captain Thomas I. Miller, lived in Annadale, Staten Island, and was closely associated with the Staten Island Museum because of his interest in microscopy and minerology.
The print by Miller appeared in a popular journal of the times, which is probably where Barrows encountered it. The painting by Barrows is an original work, however, and not merely a copy after Miller. The numerous variations and changes, like the addition of different scenes of people in the foreground, are typical of those made by self-taught artists, of which Barrow was one. |
