What brought tourists to Staten Island - for day-trips or longer stays - were its beaches, boardwalks, and such places as Happy Land Park (seen here circa 1910, four years after it opened). Accessible via public transportation, nearer than Atlantic City and the Jersey shore, these attractions drew crowds in the warmer months. Hotels and camping grounds made it a resort and vacation area for people at all income levels. This postcard portrays the heyday of that phenomenon, and would have been a popular souvenir item for visitors. - A.D. Coleman |
